Case History: Beverley’s shingles

Beverley came to me the very day she had found a painful rash on her back and it had been diagnosed as shingles by her GP. She had pain in her back and around her right shoulder blade and reported that she had felt unwell and headachy earlier in the week. The day I saw Beverley was a Thursday and in two days time she had organised a massive fortieth birthday party for herself and did not want to miss it. (With shingles the usual progression after the rash comes out is to develop flu-like symptoms and be very unwell with fairly considerable pain in the area of the rash). I treated Beverley using the InterX (see InterX therapy) , I also gave her some homeopathic remedies and high dose vitamin C. I saw her again the next day (the day before she was due to host her party) the pain had eased and there was a little itching in the area of the rash. We did the same treatment and she continued on the remedies. When I saw her the following week I was keen to find out whether she had been able to make it to the party. Beverley reported that after the session she had felt totally exhausted and very weak. She had gone straight to bed and not got up to 3pm on Saturday. When she did get up she felt absolutely fine and went to the party and danced to 1am! She reported feeling some minimal discomfort and slight ache in the upper back on the day I saw her (Wednesday) so I gave her one last treatment – after which she reported all symptoms resolving.

Case History : Louise’s exhaustion

Louise came to see me complaining of exhaustion. She had suffered a period of stress for many months, although she reported that since the stress had finished several months ago her energy had not improved. She said that she felt she could fall asleep easily during the day at any time, and could not stay up past 9pm. She had a permanent headache, her eyes were sensitive to light and she described feeling like she was in a permanent fog. She was also concerned because she had lost a lot of weight and it was not going back on despite eating well.

I treated Louise using the InterX 5000. I used specific settings to help rebalance the spine and the adrenal glands (these are the glands that produce adrenalin and can get very weak after a prolonged period of stress). After one treatment Louise reported remarkable benefits, the headache and light sensitivity had completely gone and her pink eyes had become white again. She didn’t feel as tired. After 3 treatments Louise felt back to normal and we ended the treatments. Although she had not yet regained the weight Louise felt normal in herself and had plenty of energy to do everything she wanted to do and not have to go to bed by 9pm!

Louise’s Comments

After the first treatment I felt energised and after 3 further sessions my life was back on track mentally and physically. Case History: Ben’s acute upper back and neck pain

Ben came to see me with a marked pain in his upper back and neck, it meant that he couldn’t turn his head to the left. However, the worst thing about it was that he couldn’t run, which was a major problem as he was intending to do a half marathon in 9 days time. Osteopathically Ben had strained a joint in his thoracic spine which was leading to a lot of associated muscle spasm. I treated him using the InterX5000 in particular settings for muscle spasm and gave him some homeopathic remedies to take. I saw Ben 3 days later where he reported that he was “miraculously better”. He now had some discomfort in the same place in his back and although he was able to turn his head a lot further he still got some discomfort at the end of the movement. I gave Ben another treatment with the InterX and felt confident he would be able to run the half marathon in 5 days time.

Ben’s comments:
This was the dreaded return of an old injury which had first occurred three years ago and at it's peak had me in bed unable to roll over or even turn my head for three days. My mobility was affected for about six months in total. So when it recurred, nine days before I was planning to run the Reading half Marathon and at a time when my physical fitness and health was better than it had been for years, I felt angry and upset. I knew from past experience that this kind of injury can get progressively worse, so I was determined to get early treatment and head off the worst of the effects if possible. Clare was able to see me the same day, and after an initial consultation treated the affected area with the mysterious InterX. This had the immediate effect of relaxing the muscles spasm and easing the tension in my back and neck. Although Clare warned me that the treatment might cause some short term discomfort, the only effect I was aware of was a huge improvement. I felt so much better that I went for a gentle work-out the following day. The follow up treatment two days later ironed out most of the remaining tension so that three days after the initial flare up I felt pretty much as good as new. I was able to stick to my training schedule that week, and completed the half marathon in a reasonable time. I didn't win of course; that really would have been a miracle!

InterX therapy is delivered using a small hand held device which was initially developed from a family of devices known as ‘Scenar’. The S.C.E.N.A.R., which stood for ‘Self-Controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulation’, was developed for the Russian space program to overcome the unique problems of space travel. Pharmaceuticals were impractical due to the large variety and quantity of drugs that may possibly be needed, and also due to the introduction of toxins into the water recycling system. The Scenar was created to be able to treat many health problems by treating the person rather than the symptoms and triggering the body’s own healing mechanisms, whatever the condition.

How does it work?

The InterX uses electrical stimulation to teach the body to heal itself. The device sends out a series of electrical signals through the skin and measures the response. Each signal is only sent out when a change, in response to the previous signal, is recorded in the electrical properties of the skin. The C-fibres, which comprise 85% of all nerves in the body, react most readily to the electro-stimulation and are responsible for the production of neuropeptides and other regulatory peptides.

When the body has been sick or injured for a period of time it switches off to the problem and fails to send healing messages. The InterX wakes up this process by stimulating the C-fibres and triggering the body to produce neuropeptides to re-ignite the healing process.
The InterX® technology is unique in the way it engages the body's natural resources to assist the processes of pain management and rehabilitation. The way in which it introduces electrical impulses into the body, is very different to conventional neurostimulation in three aspects:

"Interactive" stimulation - The electrical properties of the skin and its underlying tissues have very different properties when inflamed or injured, compared to normal healthy tissue. Scan and locate optimal treatment points - InterX® technology uses its ability to identify changes in tissue properties to provide feedback to the therapist that is valuable in the identification of optimal treatment locations. The concentric electrodes are moved across the skin, without the need for gel of any kind, scanning for areas of low impedance. Feedback is provided in a number of ways, such as changes in the way the device moves across the skin, or through readings displayed on the screen that relate to the condition of the tissue immediately under the electrodes.

Specific and targeted treatment - Once optimal treatment locations are found, targeted treatment can be applied to those areas. The ability to deliver treatment to tissues that have been neurologically disrupted by injury in such a specific manner greatly enhances the rate of recovery.
What should I expect from treatment?

The InterX is applied to the skin directly without any oil or gel. Treatment will be on the skin of the involved area, and often non-involved areas on the opposite side of the body or the back. The device may be held stationary or moved along the skin in sweeping motions, depending on the chosen mode of treatment. The patient will feel sensations which may be a tickling or vibrating sensation, or it may feel like a prickling or fine “needling” sensation. Some people are more sensitive than others to neurostimulation. The way your body responds to the treatment may not be the same as the next person. I always make sure that the level of stimulation is comfortable for you, in fact it often feels pleasant and relaxing. The number of treatments needed will depend upon the severity of your condition and how long you have had the problem. Quite often patient’s feel relief after 1 - 3 treatments but complex long standing conditions may require more.

Following a treatment you may notice an improvement in symptoms, sometimes this is followed by an aggravation later that day or the following day. This is a good sign and shows that your body is responding. You may also feel tired after a treatment and often people sleep better and generally get improved sleep through the cumulative effect of a course of treatment.

What conditions can Scenar treat?

The InterX® therapy is effective for:

Acute and chronic pain relief and the resulting increase in range of motion
Pain and inflammation – reducing/eliminating these symtoms
Reducing rehabilitation times from sports injuries and other acute trauma
Muscle relaxation, reducing muscle cramps and spasms

For chronic conditions, treatments are ideally given two or three times a week initially. As things improve the frequency can be reduced. A course of treatments will vary from individual to individual, and takes into account such factors as the stage of the pathological process, the person's age, state of health, and so on. Often for acute problems one or two sessions are enough to resolve the issue. It is recommended that for long standing conditions you have treatments on 3 consecutive days and then may be 2 treatments a week in the following 2 weeks. This constitutes one course of treatment for chronic problems you may need 1 or 2 courses of treatment with a gap of 2 or 3 weeks between.

Once therapy has begun, it is important to complete the full, ecommended treatment course in order to experience optimum relief from symptoms. Neurostimulation activates a physical response, which may increase the sensation of pain for a few hours. Adherence to the full course of treatment will minimize symptoms that a patient may experience during the natural healing process.
